GCSE Maths resit

Students must study Mathematics as part of their programme if they are aged 16 to 18 and do not hold a GCSE grade 9 to 4.

Functional skills is a pathway aiming to support students achieve at least a grade 4 at GCSE by the end of the their time at St Mary’s College.

What are the requirements to be included in Functional skills?

Any student with a GCSE grade 2 in Mathematics and/or pass in Functional Skills level 1 will be enrolled onto Functional skills level 2. Student who have GCSE grade 1 in Mathematics or who have never taken GCSE maths will be enrolled onto Functional skills level 1.

When is the earliest opportunity that I can take my Functional skills exams?

The exam is on demand so can be taken when students are ready. There will be opportunities to sit the functional skills tests in the first term. Students who pass Level 1 will move up to Level 2. Students who pass Level 2 will start the GCSE Maths course. There will be several opportunities to take the exams (if needed) during the year.

What are the requirements to be included in the GCSE resit cohort?

Any student with a GCSE grade 3 in Mathematics and/or pass in Functional Skills level 2 will be permitted onto this course.

What are the lessons like in Functional skills?

The content is covered in a year. The lessons are taught by experienced teachers and there are lots of opportunities to work through past and practice papers. Students are given resources booklets to work through in and out of class. We also have a lunchtime help clinic where students can “drop in” to get extra help.

When is the earliest opportunity that I can take my GCSE Mathematics exams?

There are two exam entry points within the academic year; one in November (results released in January) and the other in May/June (results released in August).
