Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the A level and BTEC courses?

The BTEC courses are designed to be much more practical and hands on and will require you to be able to both analyse and create TV & film products. Over the course of the two years you will spend more of your time learning different practical film making skills and these will be tested in the creation of products such as short films, documentaries, stop-motion animations and multi-camera tv shows. Youi will still be required to understand and analyses the different TV and film formats and must also be prepared to write lengthy and well researched essays as part of the course.

Does the BTEC course have any exams?

The courses include externally examined units which will test your practical skills and ability to respond to live briefs and commissions. The single award includes one exam (Unit 3 Media Skills Development) in which you will need to apply the production and editing skills learned as part of the course to create a media product in response to a nationally set project brief. Double award students also sit the unit 3 exam but will also need to complete Unit 8 (Responding to a Commission) which will require you to research, develop and pitch an idea for a creative media product in response to a creative brief provided by the exam board

What new skills will I learn?

Studying either of the BTEC creative media courses we offer at SM6 give you the chance to develop technical film making skills and experience that you can use further into your career. You will learn how to analyse tv & film products but will also learn a wide range of practical skills such as

  • Film making & editing
  • Special effects production
  • Interviewing for factual programming
  • Sound editing
  • Stoop-motion animation skills
  • + many more

So if practical learning and being rewarded for your ability to be creative are things that interest you then you should definitely sign up for the single award Extended Certificate in TV & Film Production or the double award Diploma in Creative Media Production here at SM6.
