Our Unique Offer

WORLD CLASS THINKING : WORLD CLASS ACHIEVING

Graduate Intern Support

Each year, SM6 welcomes a new team of interns who have recently graduated with excellent degrees in subjects relevant to supporting a range of academic disciplines.

Graduate Interns

Our team of Graduate Interns provide academic support to students on a one-to-one or small group basis across the curriculum, helping with subject-specific revision, exam preparation, organisation and time management, and preparing for life post-college. From supporting with essay writing, study skills, personal statements and offering CV advice, our Graduate Interns can signpost you to relevant resources to help you succeed in your studies.

Your teacher or form tutor might direct you to a Graduate Intern for support or you yourself might feel that you could utilise this service and arrange to meet with a member of the team during your study periods, on a weekly or one-off basis.

In addition to providing academic support, the team can also provide pastoral support meaning that they are available to help manage any stress and anxiety that you may encounter during what can be an overwhelming time in your life; having recently been through college themselves, our Graduate Interns are really understanding of this. If you feel you need anyone to speak with about any concerns or difficulties, we can direct you to relevant services. Stress Less is just one initiative that our Graduates run and includes a programme of activities, such as yoga, to help alleviate the pressures of your studies and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Whether academic or pastoral, our Graduate Interns are eager to help. We look forward to welcoming you to SM6 and supporting you during your next stage of life.

SM6 Scholars Programme

At St Mary’s Sixth Form we invite our students to participate in the SM6 Scholars Programme.

Being in a tutor group which focusses on applying early for university, interview practice and preparation, and developing university-style study skills, the students are supported in whatever pathway they eventually decide to follow for further education. They receive high levels of support with their Personal Statements and UCAS applications from an experienced form tutor – three of whom attended Cambridge University and so can share their direct experiences of applying to one of the world’s leading universities. The students are given the chance to visit Oxford and Cambridge universities, and these trips are enhanced by our status as a World Class school and the contacts we have.

Nobody is pressured into applying for Oxbridge or Medicine, however the programme has already had success with students receiving offers from Cambridge, Durham, Imperial, Warwick, York and other leading universities, and 6 students being offered places to study Medicine.

Pastoral Care

Our pastoral care at SM6 is outstanding.
Our aim is to ensure that you are able to access your education and help you to be in the right frame of mind to learn. Life can sometimes be difficult, and we pride ourselves on being able to spot when things are not right. The SM6 team, along with our experienced form tutors and graduate interns, offer our services to help you cope with what can be quite a challenging time.

Mrs Lenham, Senior Learning Mentor

No issue is ever too big or too small, we have non-teaching members of staff at all times of the day should you need someone to talk to. You will also have your own personal form tutor who will track your attendance and progress and will be there to help you through your college journey, eventually helping you with your next steps whether that be university, apprenticeships or employment.

We hope you appreciate the supportive atmosphere at SM6 as we help you be the very best version of yourself possible.

SM6 Medical, Health & Social Care Academy (MHSC)

The MHSC Academy was established in July 2015 between St Mary’s College Sixth Form (SM6) and the NHS Hull Clinical Commissioning Group in order to support local students onto NHS and Social Care career pathways. The MHSC programme is designed to run alongside normal Sixth Form studies. The aim is to provide students from the local area, with a high-quality enrichment programme that helps progress their ambitions across the broad and diverse range of NHS careers such as medicine, nursing, allied health and social care and direct patient care.

For queries please use the contact form on our Health & Social Care page : Health & Social Care

The MHSC Academy will help students to select the right educational qualifications and also provide essential work experience and industry enrichment, delivered by NHS Partners, to prepare them for the workplace or further studies.

Academy of Music & Performing Arts

SM6 has a forward thinking, rich cultured Academy of Music & Performing Arts and one that we wholeheartedly believe has the ability to enrich not only the artistic ability and creative vision of the students in our care, but also from a pastoral perspective in terms of progression routes to success.

The Academy delivers Drama, Dance, Music, Musical Theatre as well as instrumental teaching delivered by our dedicated peripatetic teaching experts.

Academies of Sport

SM6 is proud to promote a sports offer that was described by OFSTED as “as good as it gets”. Students can engage in sport across three levels, Competitive, Leadership and Volunteering, and/or
Participation. We offer elite level coaching in a wide range of male
and female sports such as Rugby, Football, Netball, Basketball, Table Tennis and Badminton. All with nationally recognised coaching staff who have either played or coached their sport to the highest level.

Extra Curricular Opportunities at SM6

We also have an outstanding extra-curricular offer at St Mary’s; an offer described by OFSTED as ‘as good as it gets’.

This includes our Academies of Sport, Performing Arts and our unique Medical, Health and Social Care Academy. The latter of which is a partnership between ourselves, the NHS and Hull University offering bespoke training and support for those keen to pursue a career in those industries.

As well as that, we offer trips and visits all over the UK and the world. In recent years these have included charitable projects in Nepal, cultural visits to New York and Berlin as well as our annual pilgrimage to Lourdes. In short, SM6 is a place to expand your horizons, not just academically, but spiritually, morally, socially and culturally too.
